KACA President’s message

Dear KACA members,

Happy Lunar New Year to you! As we celebrate this 2021 Lunar New Year’s Day (“Seol-Nal”), I would like to extend my greetings to all of you and your family and express my heartfelt gratitude for all your accomplishments and unyielding support for KACA. Despite many challenges that we dealt with during 2020, I am very hopeful that 2021 will bring us closer and stronger than ever before.

Indeed, the COVID-19 pandemic hit all aspects of our personal and professional lives. However, we have found renewed appreciations for staying strong and connected during this difficult time. I thank all of you for your dedication to and support for our KACA community.

Back in December 2020, we had the inaugural end of year assembly to celebrate all our achievements and to extend our special thanks to our KACA members and officers (see the recap video at https://youtu.be/PAiU8DOMJ8U and follow our KACA official Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/thekacaorg).

1.     Special thanks goes out to director Joseph Juhn (전후석 감독), who came to talk with us about the Korean diaspora and Korean American identity. His documentary film, “Jeronimo” (now available through Amazon Prime), was thought-provoking and empowering. We truly appreciate his willingness to share his perspective and passion for the Korean American community without expecting anything back from us.

He is currently working on a new documentary project, CHOSEN.  CHOSEN highlights five Korean Americans running for U.S. Congress during the 2020 November election. This film will tell stories about us, Korean Americans, through diasporic perspectives.

If you want to learn more about the film, please feel free to visit at https://www.facebook.com/CHOSENdocumentary/

If you are willing to support this project, please visit Film Forum (https://my.filmforum.org/donate/i/21) and find Joseph Juhn/CHOSEN. Any support will be truly appreciated. I strongly believe that such a film will elevate the Korean American voice in our society. This is particularly critical since racism against Asians has rapidly risen in the United States of America over the last few years, particularly since the pandemic began.

2.     In an effort to highlight our current KACA members and their achievements, we would like you to take a quick survey at https://forms.gle/L45CdJgKpyV6Yfif7. We want to use this information to introduce you to the KACA community through our social media engagement. Please help us get to know you.

3.     Please renew your membership and encourage others to join KACA at http://www.thekaca.org/membership/

Our regular programs at ICA, AEJMC, and NCA will continue, and we have many more special programs lined up for this year. Please note that the “call for papers” for NCA has been sent to you and that ICA program decisions have been announced.  We will continuously work hard to strengthen our network of Korean American communication scholars/students/professionals and our voice.

Thank you again for your support, and I look forward to working with you in 2021, the Year of the Ox.

Stay strong, and stay safe!

새해 복 많이 받으세요.

Sincerely,

Moon J. Lee, Ph.D.
