KACA celebrates its 40th anniversary with a special full-day conference and Gala Reception at Renaissance Washington DC Hotel on August 9. The Anniversary Conference to be held in conjunction with this year’s AEJMC convention will feature a prominent keynote speaker: Dr. Hyo-seong Lee, Chairman of the Korea Communications Commission (KCC) and professor emeritus of Journalism and Mass Communication at Sungkyunkwan University.
Dr. Lee was appointed to this minister-level position at KCC in August 2017. KCC proactively responds to the convergence trends triggered by advanced digital technology in the broadcasting and telecommunications sector, to ensure the freedom, public nature and interest of broadcasting, and to achieve balanced growth of broadcasting and telecommunications (http://www.kcc.go.kr/).
Previously, Dr. Lee also took several leadership roles in many academic and professional associations including the Journalist Association of Korea, Korea Broadcasting Commission, Korea Association for Broadcasting & Telecommunications Studies, Korea Cable Broadcasting Commission, People’s Coalition for Media Reform, Citizens Coalition for Democratic Media, Korean Association for Communication and Information Studies, and Korea Research Society for Journalism. He received B.A. and M.A. from the Seoul National University, and Ph.D. from Northwestern University in Communication Studies.
The theme of the Anniversary Conference is: “Renewed Role of the Press in Building, Transforming, and Restoring Democracy: Korea and Beyond.” The conference will include a variety of research sessions, panel discussions, and plenary meetings, and end with Gala Reception.
