2021 KACA AEJMC Virtual Conference

KACA RESEARCH SESSION  Thursday, August 5, 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. (CDT)

On Thursday, August 5, 2021, a KACA-AEJMC research session was held. Four accepted research studies were presented, and a total of 22 attendees participated in the session. Dr. Gi Woong Yun (Nevada University) moderated the session and Drs. Yeonsoo Kim (James Madison University) and Young Eun Park (Colorado State University) served as discussants. Dr. Jinhee Kim (Pohang University of Science and Technology) presented a collaborative study titled “A Social Identity Model of Localized Social Media Dependency During Earthquake Disaster,” and Yu-Jin Heo (University of South Carolina) presented a study titled “Idealized Science vs. Scientific Skepticism in South Korea: Micro-level Evidence for the Two-cultures Thesis.” The top paper was “Portals as a Gateway to Civic Engagement: The Case of South Korea,” by Drs. Damhee Kim (University of Arizona), Joshua von Herrmann (University of Arizona), and Seungahn Nah (University of Oregon), and the top student paper was “How News Usage and the Perceived Credibility of Government News Sources Contributed to Engaging in Preventive Behaviors during the COVID-19 Pandemic: In the Context of the Protection Motivation Theory,” by Se Jung Kim (Syracuse University), Seo Yoon Lee (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign), Heejae Lee (Syracuse University), and Shengjie Yao (Syracuse University).

BUSINESS MEETING & KACA WEBINAR  Thursday, August 5, 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. (CDT)

The KACA-AEJMC business meeting was held on Thursday afternoon. Dr. Hanna Park (KACA Vice President, Sun Moon University) moderated the meeting, and a total of 22 attendees participated. President Dr. Moon J. Lee (University of Syracuse) gave a farewell speech and introduced 2021-2023 KACA officers and AEJMC subcommittee members. The KACA-AEJMC report, KACA-KOFICE joint conference recap, KACA financial report, and membership drive were followed by the top paper and top student paper awards. After the business meeting, Dr. Daemin Park (Sun Moon University) facilitated a webinar on big data analytics and media A.I. and talked about how BigKinds and KDX-AI could be used for data-driven journalism studies. 

KACA SOCIAL  Friday, August 6, 8:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. (CDT)

KACA held a social event through Zoom on Friday, August 6. A total of 23 KACA scholars and graduate students, including prospective KACA members, participated in the session. This social event began with general information about KACA and KACA-AEJMC and introducing everyone.

KACA Graduate Student Social  Friday, August 6, 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. (CDT)

KACA also held a graduate student social gathering through Zoom on Friday, August 6. This topic was “How to Sail Smoothly from Academia to Industry.” A total of 19 Korean graduate students studying communication, as well as KACA members, attended the session. This event began with graduate students taking the time to introduce themselves to each other and build fellowship. Then, Hyunji Lee (Researcher, KOFICE) and Arnold Dongwoo Chung (Data Science Consultant, Accenture) shared their experience of professional career preparations.
