2022 KACA-ICA Report

Research Session, Sunday, May 29th, 2022

On Sunday, May 29th, 2022, a KACA-ICA research session was held. Five accepted research studies were presented in the hybrid session. Dr. Katie Kang (West Virginia University) chaired the session and Drs. Sungeun Chung (Sungkyunkwan University) and Sun Kyong Lee (Korea University) served as respondents. 

Due to the nature of the hybrid research session, two studies were video recorded and shown to the audience. Seungsu Lee (University of California, USA) presented a collaborative study titled, “Pathways to Youth Political Participation: Media Literacy, Parental Intervention, and Cognitive Mediation,” and Dr. Seung Hee Yoo (Korea University) presented a collaborative study titled, “Understanding Social Media User Responses to Disinformation: The Role of information credibility and anger”. 

Three studies were presented in person. Dr. Ho Young Yoon (Ewha Womans University) presented a collaborative study titled, “How South Korean Television News Cover the First Openly Transgender Solider?” and Dr. JiHae Koo (Kookmin University) presented a study titled, “Mr. Sunshine as National Romance: Korean Popular Culture and the Political Unconscious”. 

The top paper was “Social Media Regulation, Third-Person Effects, and Public Views: A Comparative Study of South Korea, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Mexico” by Myojung Chung (Northeastern University) and John P. Wihbey (Northeastern University).

Business Meeting & Graduate Student Webinar, Sunday, May 29, 2022

The hybrid KACA-ICA business meeting was held on Sunday evening. Dr. YoungJu Shin (KACA Vice President, Arizona State University) first introduced the 2021-2023 ICA Subcommittee members and moderated the meeting. President Dr. Jin-Ae Kang (East Carolina University) gave a welcome speech. The KACA-ICA report, KACA financial report, and membership drive were presented. After the business meeting, Drs. Hyunjin Seo (University of Kansas), Hyang-Sook Kim (Towson University), and Ah-Ram Lee (University of Massachusetts Amherst) spoke about job search and interview preparations for graduate students at the Graduate Student Webinar.

KACA Reception, Sunday, May 29th 6:30pm to 9:30pm (Paris Local Time)

KACA held an onsite reception on Sunday evening in person. Over 40 KACA scholars and graduate students, including prospective KACA members, joined the KACA reception. Thanks to our sponsors, the ECU College of Fine Arts and Communication, ECU School of Communication, Syracuse University Newhouse School of Public Communications, and SUNY Buffalo Office of International Education, the reception was a huge success!
