2021 KACA-KOFICE Joint Conference

There has been a growing love for Korean culture globally. K-pop, K-drama, and K-movie draw attention from a lot of people around the world. This year, the Korean American Communication Association (KACA) has partnered with the Korean Foundation for International Cultural Exchange (KOFICE, 한국국제문화교류진흥원) to hold a virtual conference on August 6, 2021, with a theme of K-culture and media strategy. This conference will be sponsored by South Korea’s Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism (MCST, 한국문화체육관광부) and discuss the success and popularity of the K-culture and media strategies for K-contents.

Date & Time: USA – Wednesday, August 4, 2021 (7:00 PM CDT)

                   South Korea – Thursday, August 5, 2021 (9:00 AM KST)

Format: Virtual (Zoom) conference

Sessions: Panel Discussion & Research Session

We invite you to submit a full paper or an extended abstract related to any of the following topics:

  • K-pop, BTS, and global fandom
  • K-drama and Netflix
  • Parasite, Minari, and K-movie
  • Korean cuisine, mukbang, and viral food videos
  • Korea eSports
  • K-culture, social media, and interactivity
  • media strategies for K-contents
  • Korea’s response to COVID-19
  • Other significant issues related to K-culture

We embrace various theoretical orientations and methodological approaches to research.

Submission Guidelines

1. Application: If you are planning to submit your research paper, please submit the application form (https://forms.gle/S6L6wbAePt3Sgroo9) by May 30, 2021. We just need your information and the (working) title of your paper.

2. Submission Deadline: All submissions must be made by email (aejmckaca@gmail.com) no later than 11 p.m. CDT, Sunday, June 20, 2021

3. Categories of Final Submissions (Two categories):

(1) Full Paper(s)

  • 25 pages maximum (no more than 25 pages), plus references, tables, figures, and all notes
  • Consistent with the APA style
  • Should be written in English or Korean

(2) Extended Abstract(s)

  • Five pages maximum, plus references, tables, figures, and all notes
  • Consistent with the APA style
  • Extended abstracts should contain a brief literature review, research questions/hypotheses, a detailed method section, and actual findings(NOT expected findings). Abstracts only with literature review or research questions would NOT be considered.
  • Should be written in English or Korean

4. Submission Process, Requirement, and Top Paper Award(s)

  • Submission method: All manuscripts should be submitted by email. Please send files (the title page file and the manuscript in M.S. Word or PDF format) to aejmckaca@gmail.com.  
  • All submissions must include a separate cover page containing the following information: paper title, author name, affiliation, mailing address, email address, and phone number.
  • Author identification: Names and all information that may identify the author(s) should not appear anywhere in the manuscript other than on the separate cover page.
  • All submissions will be blind reviewed by three reviewers with expertise in the area.
  • Authors do not need to be a member of KACA to submit a paper. However, once the paper is accepted, the author(s) of the submitted abstract should join KACA to present the completed research at the conference.
  • To acknowledge research excellence, we will provide cash awards for the top paper award winner(s). Full papers are preferred. Honorarium will be provided for all presenters and discussants.
